Stitching Friendship: Salk Sixth Graders Bring Dragons to Life
Last semester at SALK, students in Mrs. Meyer's Family and Consumer Sciences class had the opportunity to participate in a cross-disciplinary initiative. During the sewing unit, students not only learned the technical skill of sewing but also discovered that with perseverance, consistency, and patience, they can tackle ANY new skill they want to learn.
As we concluded our sewing unit, students embraced an exciting challenge: creating projects for younger students. We partnered with Summit Lane Elementary?home of the Dragons?to collaborate on this special project.
Ms. Connolly's 3rd-grade class had recently read the book Dear Dragon , a heartwarming story about a student who forms a friendship with a dragon pen pal. This story provided a meaningful opportunity for students to explore themes such as friendship, creativity, and empathy. After reading the book, the 3rd graders designed their own dragons using provided templates.
Mrs. Meyer's remarkable sixth graders then brought these designs to life by sewing handmade stuffed animal versions of the 3rd graders' dragons using their newly acquired sewing skills. It was truly inspiring to see these students dedicate themselves to a project that brought joy to others. In addition to their sewing efforts, they wrote heartfelt letters to accompany the stuffed dragons.
After receiving their "come-to-life" dragon creations, Ms. Connolly's students put their letter-writing skills to good use by sending back beautiful thank-you notes.
