Melody Hong Places Sixth in Regeneron Science Talent Search
General Douglas MacArthur High School is thrilled to announce that senior Melody Hong finished 6th in the nation in the prestigious 2025 Regeneron Science Talent Search, the oldest science and math competition for high schoolers in the country. She is the first student from MacArthur to reach this milestone, for which she won an $80,000 prize.
Melody developed alternative statistical methodologies to better identify a genetic variant called trans-MQTL, which is tied to certain complex diseases like Alzheimer's and Type 1 diabetes, for her research titled, "A Bayesian Exploration Into More Flexible trans-Methylation Quantitative Trait Locus Mapping." This month, Melody presented her research to judges during a weeklong competition in Washington, D.C.
"It's an affirmation that my hard work was worth it, and I'm glad to be recognized for that," Melody said, "but it's also been a tremendous win for the community ? for my family, for Levittown and MacArthur, and also my church and my Korean American community."
"This is an extraordinary accomplishment and a true testament to her dedication and passion for learning," said Superintendent Todd Winch. "While Melody's talent and determination are undeniable, her success is also a reflection of the incredible educators who have guided, challenged, and inspired her throughout her journey. From early learning experiences to advanced coursework, our teachers have played a pivotal role in shaping her path."
