Science Research Students Shine in a Busy Two Weeks of Events & Competitions - image0011 It was an exciting and eventful week for MacArthur's science research students, who showcased their knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in multiple events.

Allyssa Aquino and Meaghan Campbell proudly represented the school at the Northwell/Hofstra Zucker School of Medicine Long Island Brain Bee, an academic contest that tests students' understanding of neuroscience. The Brain Bee challenges participants with topics ranging from brain anatomy and function to neurological disorders and medical advancements, providing a glimpse into the complexities of the human brain.

Meanwhile, Gianna Vu, Phoebe Zivkovich, Daniel Islam, Danielle Herrera, Ramon Martinez, Andre Bowman, and Jayden Keyes put their research to the test at the Nassau Community College Science Fair. These students presented their scientific projects to expert judges, competing against some of the brightest young minds in the region. A special congratulations goes to Gianna, who earned 1st place for her research on how different genres of classical music impact SAT-level math and reading performance. Her work highlights the intersection of cognitive science and music, offering valuable insights into learning and test-taking strategies.

Additionally, Sofia Duda, Jenna Ehrlich, Jiamin Rao, and Anastasia Halyan-Sliputina participated in Northwell's Medical Marvels, an event that tasks students with developing innovative solutions to pressing healthcare challenges. This year's focus was on addressing the effects of social media on mental well-being. Our students worked collaboratively to propose creative, research-backed strategies to support healthier digital habits and mental wellness among young people.

Finally, Allyssa Aquino, Catherine Purirojejananon, Meaghan Campbell, Oscar DeGus, Phoebe Zivkovich, Vincent McCormack, Jolie Naidus, and James Colella completed at New York Chemagination at St. John's University. This competition challenges students to use current technology and understanding to envision a breakthrough 25 years in the future which will improve human existence. Congratulations to Allyssa, Catherine and Meaghan for taking home a 2nd place trophy in the energy category and Phoebe and Oscar for taking home a 3rd place trophy in the medical field!

These activities provided incredible opportunities for our students to apply their scientific knowledge, think critically, and engage with professionals in their respective fields. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and accomplishments!
