		 - image001 On October 11, the Levittown Board of Education was recognized for their service to the community. School board members take on one of the most important civic responsibilities: overseeing the education of the community's youth. Boards of Education guide their local school systems and ensure public schools are flexible and responsive to the needs of the community.

School boards are composed of volunteers who are not compensated for their service. They are individuals within the community who dedicate their time to improving public education. School board members statewide collectively oversee nearly 2.3 million K-12 students and $85 billion in budgeted spending.

With schoolchildren as their primary focus, school board members have a tremendous amount of shared responsibilities. These include creating a shared vision for the future of education, helping to develop a budget and presenting that budget to the community, aligning district resources to improve achievement, supporting a healthy school district culture in which to work and to learn, and so much more. Through professional development opportunities offered by the New York State School Board Association, Board members dedicate a tremendous amount of time to learn about their role. They continue to dedicate themselves by attending various meetings throughout the district, concerts, games, award ceremonies as well as representing the district at various community wide events.

In an ever changing world where passions run high, being a board member is no easy task. We are lucky to have seven phenomenal board members who have led us through very challenging times, and who continue to put the needs of our students at the forefront of every decision they make.
