Literacy Center

This year, the Levittown School District has added a new instructional enhancement titled, "Literacy Center" for all students in Kindergarten through fifth grade. The lab is taught by our reading teacher, with the support of a Teaching Assistant. Weekly lessons will be designed to strengthen reading comprehension skills and writing through a systematic series of topics. The year began with identifying the main idea and locating supporting details in a book or short article. The students wrote descriptive paragraphs about vacations, favorite foods and objects. The focus then shifted to learning about sequencing; character studies and making predictions. The classes involve group reading, individual writing, class-wide discussions and the use of graphic organizers. Each comprehension skill is covered for two weeks. As the year progresses, other topics will be covered such as cause and effect, visualizing, inference, as well as other important skills necessary for enjoying literature and for improving reading comprehension.
