MacArthur Science Research Student Ethan Butov Recognized as National Junior Innovator - image001Congratulations to science research student Ethan Butov who was recently named a Top 300 Junior Innovator in the 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (JIC), a program of the Society for Science. The Thermo Fisher JIC stands as the premier national STEM competition for middle school scholars.

Ethan developed BioShield, a nature-inspired wildfire defense system which combines a non-toxic protective coating with plant-strengthening treatments, and an AI-powered threat detection application, in an effort to help vulnerable communities become more resilient to these disasters. In testing, Ethan found that the fire-suppressant coating he developed greatly limited flame spread, caused fuels to self-extinguish, and maintained durability for up to six weeks. Additionally, vegetation treated with the formula exhibited reduced heat and drought stress, enabling plants to survive extended dry periods without turning into dry wildfire fuel. Finally, the AI risk assessment system achieved over 96% accuracy in scanning properties for ignition hazards and delivering actionable early-warning guidance before conditions escalated.

Reflecting on the achievement, Ethan shared, "It is truly an honor to be recognized as a Top 300 Junior Innovator. I started this project to help solve a pressing issue affecting so many communities, and receiving this national recognition means the world to me. I'm deeply grateful to my research teachers, mentors, and parents for their constant support and encouragement."
