Renowned Composer Workshops With Salk Middle School Orchestra - image005 Young musicians in the Jonas E. Salk Middle School Orchestra had the unique opportunity on March 12 to work directly with a renowned composer who created the songs they will soon perform, giving them access to in-depth knowledge of the music.

Composer Soon Hee Newbold, known for works performed by young musicians nationwide including "Russian Music Box," "Riders in the Night" and "Ships of Ireland," gathered with Salk Middle School's orchestra players in sixth, seventh and eighth grade. Students gained valuable insight into Mrs. Newbold's success through a question-and-answer session, helping them learn how a piece evolves from an initial idea to a fully realized composition. On stage, she composed as sixth graders' played "Russian Music Box," adding thoughtful feedback on musical interpretation and technique. The interactive session allowed the orchestra to refine their performance while gaining a deeper understanding of the artistry behind the music.

Orchestra teacher Holly Grabowski played Mrs. Newbold's pieces when she was a middle school performer herself and praised her ability to incorporate musical elements in an accessible way for young players.

"There's sometimes a stigma that orchestra music is purely classical or old fashioned, but she creates beautiful melodies that are both exciting and accessible to so many grade levels," Mrs. Grabowsky said. "It's great for the students to hear the perspective of someone in high regard as herself."
