Summit Lane Elementary School fifth graders in Jennifer O'Brien and Parbatee Chucheong's class celebrated Read Across America Week from March 1-5. The week is observed each year by the National Education Association and encourages children to read more books and get excited about reading.
Throughout the fun-filled week, the class was encouraged to dress according to specific themed days. Each day in school, the students read books which corresponded to how they dressed for the day. Themed dress days included dressing in a silly outfit, dressing as an influential individual, representing their favorite sports team, representing their family's culture and dressing for their future job.
Over the course of the week, the classroom housed many different characters. Students dressed as artists, celebrities, gymnasts and teachers. They learned about the cultures of their peers as well. After completing their reading log during the week, students even had the opportunity to win great prizes. It was an exciting week filled with a love for literacy.?
