Salk's 8th Grade Football Defeats Garden City for Undefeated Season
The Salk 8th grade football team entered the 2017 season on a mission to wrap up their middle school careers undefeated. The mission was daunting, as they entered the season with a highly competitive schedule that culminated with a road game at perennial powerhouse Garden City.
Leading up to their final game, the Seahawks had already left an impression on opposing teams. Using an extremely physical and aggressive style of play, Salk used a ground and pound offensive philosophy to control possession and wear down the opposition on their way to scoring 166 points on the season. On the defensive side of the ball, the Seahawks limited opposing teams to 44 points scored on the season. The punishing Seahawk defense was aggressive, using a steady barrage of blitzes to force teams into mistakes.
With an undefeated season, and perfect middle school career, on the line, the Seahawks marched into Garden City for their final dual. The pressure did not get to Salk as they came out confident and in control, marching down the field on their first possession, scoring the game's first touchdown. That would be all the scoring the Seahawks would need, as the defense shut down Garden City. Late in the first quarter, with the ball on the 5 yard line, it looked like Garden City would tie the score. Instead, the Seahawk defense stepped it up and made four tackles behind the line of scrimmage for a cumulative loss of 20 yards. Later in the game, the Salk defense had two more huge stops on 4th down plays. The Seahawks added two additional rushing touchdowns in the second half to make the final score 20-0. The game was capped off when the Salk defense recovered a Garden City fumble in the final quarter of action, and then marched down to the Garden City one yard line before taking a knee in the final minute. The final win was a complete team effort and a great win for the team, as they had this game in mind since the season began.
While going undefeated is quite an accomplishment, this particular team completed an even more impressive feat - going undefeated for their entire Salk career. Besides the win over Garden City, the Seahawks defeated strong teams including Wantagh, Bethpage, Woodland, Clarke, Manhasset, Merrick Avenue and Grand Avenue. The Salk coaching staff is extremely proud of the team's tireless work ethic, team-first attitude, and relentless pursuit. Congratulations on a special two years at Salk and good luck to all of the players at MacArthur as they look to continue the "streak".
