Salk Library's Summer Reading Mystery Boxes Foster a Growth Mindset
English classes at Salk recently participated in a Mystery Box activity centered around the summer reading novel, Pay It Forward. Mrs. Anderson, Salk librarian, created seven mysteries for the students to solve related to the content of the book. The students used materials provided including rebus puzzles, airline tickets, street signs and the novel itself to solve each mystery to earn the lock combinations and keys. The purpose of the activity was to review the summer reading book and also to develop a growth mindset while working in groups. Students demonstrated grit like the main character, Trevor demonstrates in the novel. The group members make encouraging and positive comments to each other even when the mysteries were difficult to solve. At the conclusion of the activity, the students shared the growth mindset comments that were spoken by the group members.
