MacArthur Coronavirus Resources and Updates

Thursday, June 11, 2020

Good evening, Generals! This is Mr. Sheehan with some exciting news as we're adding another senior event to celebrate your graduation! On Wednesday, June 17th, the teachers are giving you a senior send off! Decorate your cars, wear your college apparel, and drive through our main parking lot as the teachers and staff members will bid you a fond farewell! The "drive through" celebration will take place between 10:00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. In order to maintain social distancing protocols, you must remain in your cars throughout the entire process. Just a reminder that we have two other important events next week: Cap & Gown and Yearbook deliveries on Tuesday the 16th, and the filming of the graduation walks on the 18th or 22nd. Please refer to the schedule on our homepage for your time-slot.

All the best, and stay safe and strong General Nation

Thursday, June 4, 2020

The commencement ceremony for the Class of 2020 is of the utmost importance. Our top priority is to have a live in person graduation ceremony. However, we have to prepare for each of the three previously stated scenarios. In that regard, and in order to make this year's ceremony as inclusive as possible, MacArthur administration would like to pre-record each graduate walking across our auditorium stage in his/her cap and gown receiving the diploma from a family member. This process will take place on Thursday, June 18th and Monday, June 22nd. In order to maintain NYS social distancing regulations, there are certain protocols that must be followed:

  • The graduate and no more than 3 additional family members may be present at this event and must arrive in one car.
  • The graduate should be wearing his/her cap, gown, and other materials provided in the cap/gown bag received on June 16th. Please make sure you have ironed the gown.
  • Enter the parking lot between Salk and MacArthur, and show your timed ticket (attached) to the security guard.
  • Enter the Auditorium doors and proceed to the right side of the stage.
  • Parent(s) will present the diploma to the graduate. If no family member is able to attend, a MacArthur administrator will present the diploma.
  • The graduate and family members will exit the auditorium and proceed to the C-Wing main entrance where you will have an opportunity to photograph the graduate in front of the MacArthur banner.
  • Each graduate and family will be given a window to be videoed, so you must adhere to the assigned time. The date and time are listed below.
  • If the graduate chooses not to participate in this event, the student's senior yearbook photo will be shown in lieu of the video. If the graduate does not have a senior photo, the graduate's name will be shown.

Please refer to the schedule below for the date and time of your recording.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at jsheehan@levittownschools.com My hopes are that you and your families continue to remain safe, and we certainly look forward to seeing you at this joyous occasion!

Sincerely,
Joe Sheehan

Good evening. As always, we hope this message finds you and your families safe and doing well. This is Mr. Sheehan with a message regarding the return of student textbooks and calculators which will take place on Monday, June 8th through Wednesday, June 10th. Please note, only seniors must also return their "1-1" tablets. We will be following the same safety and social distancing protocols that were administered for the locker clean-outs last month, specifically, wearing a mask or facial covering, and having your school issued ID cards to be scanned in and out of the building. Please refer see below for specific information on the date, assigned time slot, and location for dropping off materials.

In addition, the New York State Department of Education has taken action to allow student athletes to participate in the Fall 2020 sports season if they have previously had a health examination for school attendance in the 2018-2019 or 2019-2020 school years. Please see our website for additional information and look for updates regarding fall sports in the near future. Our Family ID system will be available by the end of this week.

  1. Students are broken up alphabetically by their last name and are assigned a time slot and specific day to enter.
  2. Specific guidelines outlining the student schedule is located on our school website.
  3. We will be following all social distancing policies, so all students must wear a mask or facial covering. Staff members will be placed both inside and outside the building to maintin the 6ft distancing policy.
  4. Students may not bring in other family members to help return items.
  5. Any student that is ill, or lives with someone who is ill, should not come in. Please contact building administration for an alternative plan.
  6. Students may only enter the building at the doors by the girls locker room. If any student drives or is getting dropped off, you must use the parking lot in between Salk and MacArthur.
  7. Students will be lined up using markers to space them apart by 6 feet.
  8. Students must have their school issued ID card to be scanned in and out of the building.
  9. Once students drop off all of their books and materials in the gym, students will exit out the doors by the small gym. In order to uphold all safety regulations, we emphasize the importance of following the posted time schedule.

We would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation for following the above guidelines to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Be safe, and be strong.

Dear Parents and Members of the Class of 2020,

As always, we hope that this letter finds you and your families safe, and doing well. Although we know this has been a difficult senior year for you, we are extremely proud of how you have risen to the challenge during this unprecedented time. As a district, we have been diligently planning to provide you with a memorable graduation that will maintain the safety guidelines set forth by the Governor's office as this is our first concern for your family and fellow students.

Over the past few weeks, we have been connecting with the community, students, and fellow colleagues on how we can best provide our senior class with a proper graduation ceremony. We are sincerely grateful for those conversations and the time you spent completing the online survey. We have taken your feedback to formulate three plans for this year's graduation ceremony.

The first plan is to have an in-person yet socially distant live graduation at Hofstra University on July 30th. We are awaiting a time from Hofstra. This plan is our first preference as this has been a Levittown tradition. This scenario allows for two guests per graduate permitted into the David S. Mack Arena at Hofstra University. Of course, this plan is contingent on the guidelines set forth by the Governor at the time.

If we are unable to have a live indoor ceremony at Hofstra, but have permission to use an outdoor venue, we have created a back-up plan. In this case, we will have an in-person yet socially distant live graduation on the football field at Levittown Memorial Education Center on July 27th at 7:00 PM with a rain date of July 29th at 7:00 PM. As with the first option, each graduate will be allowed to bring only two guests.

Should we not be able to gather for an in person ceremony, we have created a third plan. We would have a virtual graduation with all speeches and graduation rituals pre-recorded. This would be released on July 30th at 7:00 PM. Of course this option is a last resort and will only occur if the Governor's restrictions are still in place in July.

Each plan's logistics is rather intricate. Given the ever-evolving nature of the pandemic, we feel it would be premature to distribute specific detailed plans for graduation provided that we may have to alter them as restrictions may or may not change in the future.

I want to reassure you that graduation is a matter of the greatest importance to the MacArthur High School community and myself. Over the course of the next eight weeks, we will closely monitor the Governor's restrictions and make the best possible decision to provide your children the experience they have earned and deserve.

Thank you, and continue to stay safe and strong General Nation!

Sincerely,
Joseph Sheehan
Principal

Good afternoon. As always, I hope this message finds you and your families safe and doing well. This is Mr. Sheehan, and I would like to thank all of the students, parents, and staff members that participated in our locker clean-out sessions earlier this week for making it the success it was, and for upholding all of the safety protocols that were put in place. Also, the document "Overall Course Average Calculations 2019-2020" explains how full year and half year course averages will be calculated. If you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's guidance counselor.

Thank you, have a great weekend, and continue to be safe and strong General Nation.

Mr. Sheehan,
Principal

Students will be permitted to enter the building beginning this coming Monday, May 11th through Wednesday, May 13th. For admittance into the building, the following guidelines must be followed:

  5. Any student that is ill, or lives with someone who is ill, should not come in. Please contact building administration for an alternative plan.
  6. Students may only enter the building through the senior entrance by the senior parking lot. If any student drives or is getting dropped off, you must use the senior parking lot, which is parallel to Wantagh Ave.
  7. Students will be lined up using markers to space them apart by 6 feet.
  8. Students must have their school issued ID card to be scanned in and out of the building.
  9. Once students gather all belongings from their lockers, students will exit the building through the north exit by the gym lobby. In order to uphold all safety regulations, we emphasize the importance of following the posted time schedule.

Monday, May 4th, 2020

Good Afternoon,

We hope this message finds you and your families safe and doing well.

As you may have heard, Governor Cuomo has extended the closure of schools through the end of the school year. Please know that we are developing plans for allowing students the opportunity to pick up their personal belongings. We'll reach out to you next week with additional information.

As we continue our journey of distant learning, you may have noticed that many teachers began phasing in live sessions to their current remote learning tools via the Zoom platform. Live sessions will continue to develop for all classes over the upcoming weeks, so please be on the lookout for information regarding these on teacher Edmodo pages. In addition, you will find two important resources on the MacArthur High School webpage under the coronavirus resources link in regards to utilizing the Zoom technology. One is in reference to student and parent expectations as well as the code of conduct for remote learning, and the other is a tutorial on how to use Zoom. If you, or your child, have questions or concerns, please contact teachers through the messaging system in Edmodo or via district email. We appreciate your anticipated patience and consideration as we all navigate through this challenging new way of teaching and learning together. Enjoy your evening, and have a great weekend.

Joseph Sheehan
