high school students enter each year by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Scholarship winners are selected from a finalist group of about 15,000 outstanding students, after a review of their abilities, skills and accomplishments. Each finalist was evaluated on their academic record, including the difficulty of classes and their grades, leadership roles, contributions to the school, two sets of test scores, a written recommendation from the high school and the finalist's own essay.
