General Douglas MacArthur High School junior Saajid Chowdhury was recently honored with the Rensselaer Medal Award from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for his outstanding academic achievement in mathematics and science.
As a medalist, Chowdhuryis awarded with a $25,000 per year college scholarship, guaranteed for four years if he chooses to enroll at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. It can also be extended into a fifth year for graduate school.The Rensselaer Medal is presented to distinguished high school juniors each year to recognize their academic achievement and to motivate students toward careers in science, engineering and technology. Chowdhury is interested in pursuing a career in theoretical physics or applied math in the future.
This year, Chowdhury was enrolled in high level courses such as Advanced Placement U.S. History, Advanced Placement Physics 2 and Advanced Placement Calculus BC. In addition, he is involved in numerous extracurricular activities with science research teacher Dr. David Friedman and is a member of the school's orchestra.
