Automotive Technology

Course Description:
This two-year National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES) approved program provides students with theory and practical skills in the automotive industry, such as steering and suspension systems, engine performance, electrical wiring, brake systems, and inspections. Students will be afforded the opportunity to work on customer vehicles in our licensed inspection and repair station while using the latest diagnostic equipment on today's complex vehicles.

Course Summary
We offer a two year fully comprehensive Automotive Program which will not only provide basic skill sets like changing a tire, but will also promote highly technical skills such as diagnosing a check engine light or reprogramming today's tire pressure monitoring systems. Our curriculum contains 770 hours of hands on and theory training which closely aligns with the nationally recognized NATEF curriculum.

First Year Student Course Work:
  • Wheels and tires
  • Braking systems
  • Suspension systems
  • Alignments
  • Steering systems
Second Year Student Course Work:
  • Engines and Cooling systems
  • Electrical systems
  • Ignition systems
  • Fuel injection systems
  • Emission systems

Program Opportunities Include:

  • Participate in Automotive troubleshooting competitions such as GNYDA, SKILLS USA and Ford AAA
  • Train for ASE certification examinations
  • Perform inspections, wheel alignments, routine repairs and maintenance on cars, trucks and motorcycles for community clients

Skills Acquired in our Certified Vehicle Repair and NYS Inspection Facility:

  • Test parts and systems to ensure that they are working properly
  • Identify electrical problems by using SNAPON's MODIS diagnostic scan tool
  • Use NATEF job sheets to ensure that all components are fully examined
  • Perform basic vehicle maintenance including oil changes, tune ups and tire rotations
  • Diagnose and repair worn parts such as wheel bearings, tie rod ends and brake pads
  • Explain to clients their automotive problems and the repairs done on their vehicles
  • Skills required for entry level technician positions
