Math in First Grade at Gardiners Ave.
This month, in our First Grade math group, we are practicing place value with two-digit numbers, and constructing meaning with hands-on activities. First, students are presented with kinesthetic fun in which they use place value sliders with a partner to show numbers in standard form, and practice reading number names. Next, students build numbers on a place value chart with base ten blocks. The blocks allow for a visual foundation, which facilitates completing during the final part of the activity. A written component is added and students record numbers in expanded form with corresponding pictures. This activity is frequently revisited, as place value is one of the key concepts included in the mathematics curriculum.?
