Pumpkin Scientists at Gardiners Ave.
After a fun visit to White Post Farms, students in Mrs. Farley's 1st grade class became scientists and conducted a "Pumpkin Investigation". Students worked with a partner to examine their pumpkin with a hand lens to determine the physical properties using their five senses. Students then went to pumpkin centers where they measured the height of the pumpkin in unifix cubes, the circumference of the pumpkin using string and then compared the length of the string to unifix cubes. In addition, students predicted and tested whether or not the pumpkin would sink or float in water. Just like real scientists, students recorded all of their findings on a data sheet. As a follow up activity, students wrote all about what they learned from their hands on "Pumpkin Investigation". It's safe to say that Mrs. Farley's 1st graders are now pumpkin experts!
