Literacy Center at Gardiners Ave.
Welcome Back! We are in the 7th year of the Literacy Center program. The goal of the Literacy Center is to enhance literacy instruction in grades K-4. The students worked on "getting to know your classmate" activities during the first week of school. They participated in a classmate scavenger hunt to answer questions they had on a sheet. They enjoyed working on this activity and got to know their friends a little better.
Some of the skills that we will focus on during the year are: central message, facts and details, cause and effect, sequencing and author's purpose. The first skills that we focused on were Main Idea/Central message and Facts and Details. The 1st and 2nd graders heard the story The Important Book by Margret Wise Brown. After the story, the students had the opportunity to write about what is important about them adding interesting details.
Some of the older students had the opportunity to read a paragraph and to come up with the missing main idea and match important details up to a picture. The children are excited about revisiting literacy skills and learning more skills through fun and challenging activities. We look forward to a great year.
