East Broadway students have added ballroom dance to their list of educational skills. The students have been learning the tango, merengue, fox trot and rumba during a ten-week workshop with dance instructor Jessica Salvesen of Dancing Classroom of Long Island.
"My goal has been to push the students out of their comfort zones," Salvesen said. "Through dance, they become more self confident."
The students gather in the school's front lobby where they are paired with partners and dance together in a circle. Halfway through each practiced step, the students are then instructed to change partners, allowing them to work with a range of abilities. At the end of each session, two students are chosen to present their favorite "move," which is then incorporated into a modern line dance with popular music.
