Setting his sights on a career as an oncologist one day, Division Avenue High School senior Brandon Smith attended the 10-day National Student Leadership Conference in Washington, DC during the summer where he was enrolled in the medicine and health care program.
Brandon applied for the conference and was accepted, along with high school students from across the country and around the world. The conference allowed the students to experience a taste of college life while living on campus at American University and explore future careers while harnessing their leadership abilities.
As part of the medicine and health care program, Brandon had the opportunity to visit John Hopkins Hospital where he participated in clinical rounds, learned about anatomy and was hands-on, dissecting a cow eye and a sheep's heart. He was also able to watch an open-heart surgery.
Throughout the conference, leadership sessions were facilitated. "These sessions were very inspiring and motivating," said Brandon. "I took a lot home from them."
Brandon also enjoyed meeting students from different parts of the world. He met people from Alabama, Brazil, California, Germany and Puerto Rico and was able to explore the city of Washington, DC and Georgetown during the conference.
