The Levittown Public Schools offer one of the most comprehensive, in-depth K-12 programs on Long Island. Students are provided unique opportunities and experiences in Academic, Career & Technical Education, Special Education, Extra Curricular, Community Service and Athletic programs. The hallmark of the district is the ability to meet wide and disparate differences of students by offering as many or more programs in-district than other school systems.
Traditional academic course work is supplemented by a number of enriching and helping options. Starting in grade one and continuing into grade two, the Levittown Schools provide a unique regular education option for select primary students through our Extended Readiness classes. These small and intimate regular education classrooms are provided for children with developmental learning issues. Likewise, early identification of gifted students begins in the primary grades where they are offered specialized gifted and talented instruction which is continued through the middle school years. Support for struggling students continues into the secondary schools by means of a system of remedial programs for individual and small group help, and/or regular academic groupings known as RX classes, which are tailored to meet the needs of struggling students through additional class time and smaller teacher-to-student ratios. These initiatives have nearly doubled over the last few years as all students tackle the requirement of receiving a Regents diploma. When necessary the district even provides extra help classes on weekends. Options for accelerated secondary school learners abound beyond the gifted program with a wealth of Honors and Advanced Placement courses including a rapidly developing Science Research Program which is providing opportunities for Levittown scholars to enter into the nation's most prestigious high school competitions. Add to this a commitment to extended liberal arts opportunities through performing music instruction which commences in third grade, district-funded field trips, specialized ESL centers, in-district GED and in-district Alternate High School programs and it becomes clear why the Levittown Public Schools are a rising star amongst Nassau County districts.
Academic programs, however, are just part of the universe of opportunities in Levittown. Unlike most other districts, Levittown provides an extensive, in-district Career & Technical Program for any secondary student who would benefit from such an education. Contrary to the growing practice of sending students to regional vocational/technical training, Levittown maintains an extensive in-district program that includes programs in automotive technology, architectural drafting, carpentry, computer technology, cosmetology/spa services, culinary arts, early childhood care and education, graphic imaging/printing, electrical technology, horticulture, and medical assisting. So effective is the Levittown endeavor that as many as 21 other districts send students to Levittown for their Career & Technical Education.
Likewise the Special Education offering in the district is not only the equivalent of those in other districts, but offers more specialized programs than any other Long Island district. This allows us to educate many Levittown students within the boundaries of the district and not send them out to BOCES. Similar to the Career & Technical program, 117 students from 45 districts select Levittown for their education because of the high quality instruction available to students with handicapping conditions.
Special community services include an after-school childcare program for elementary school aged children. This low cost, self sustaining program provides elementary school children with safe, supervised childcare from dismissal time until 6:00 p.m. everyday school is in session. Similarly, the district sponsors or co-sponsors low cost summer recreation, computer, music and academic programs for those parents wishing to keep their children close to home in a productive and safe summer learning or play environment. Community needs are further met through a Saturday Dance and Gymnastics program and a year round Adult Continuing Education program. Both initiatives allow for low cost, quality opportunities that would not otherwise be available to the community without the backing and support of the Levittown Public Schools.
