Abbey Lane Students Learn the Effects of Consumerism on the Environment
Children are becoming more aware of the harmful effects of consumerism on the environment and that the power to shape the future lies in their hands. The fifth graders in Mrs. Valentine's class were faced with the challenge of cleaning up an oil spill with a budget of one million dollars. Working collaboratively in groups, students designed systems that effectively contained the spill and left no traces of oil behind. This was a great opportunity for students to explore multiple solutions and learn how they can use their knowledge to protect the environment.
