Under the leadership of our 4th grade teachers Mr. Paul Speranza and Mrs. Kelly DiPretoro, Abbey Lane hosted its 3rd Annual Spelling Bee on January 6, 2017. After in-class competitions were held, fifteen students from grades 3-5 emerged as class champions and moved on to participate in a school tournament. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald and Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Mrs. Debbie Rifkin served as our judges. Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Mr. Todd Winch served as our moderator. After two hours of consecutive rounds, two students were left to see who would be champion. 4th grade student Matthew Hartmann faced off against 5th grader, Alex Gao. After several more rounds of intense competition, Alex Gao was crowned as our school champion. This is Alex's third victory in a row as Abbey Lane's Spelling Bee Champion. Alex will be moving forward once again to participate in the Scripps Spelling Bee regional competition at Hofstra University later this year. We are proud of everyone who participated.
