Our Community Helpers
Abbey Lane students attended school dressed like firefighter, police officers, doctors, nurses, teachers and more as a culmination to a unit on community helpers. For several weeks, the first-graders have been learning about the various roles of workers in the community and how they assist in making the community a better place to live.


During the May 3 Board of Education meeting, Abbey Lane music students Michael Draluck, Tiffany Guzman, Leah Librizzi, Savanna Mendez Andy Murillo, Ceyda Nazli, Julianna Newman and Demetrios Zirogiannis were recognized for their participation in the Nassau Music Educators Association All-County festival held in January.

Abbey Lane students are challenging the stereotype of being "macho." During an assembly with MACHO Man Foundation founder Cary Epstein, the students learned that MACHO is an acronym, which spelled out, means my actions can help others.

Abbey Lane Elementary School faculty members Jessica Kaufman, Dr. Edel McCarville, Jennifer Pignataro, Rich Schwartz and Diana Taormina were invited to present a proposal on Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports during the Teach to Lead Summit held at LIU Post on Jan. 12.

Under the leadership of our 4th grade teachers Mr. Paul Speranza and Mrs. Kelly DiPretoro, Abbey Lane hosted its 3rd Annual Spelling Bee on January 6, 2017. After in-class competitions were held, fifteen students from grades 3-5 emerged as class champions and moved on to participate in a school tournament.


On the first day of the Abbey Lane STEAM Club, kindergartners were able to learn what STEAM stands for and a little bit about the engineering process!

Upon entering the Abbey Lane Elementary School cafeteria, the sweet aroma of candy, icing and graham crackers filled the air as students and parents participated in a gingerbread house-making activity.

On Thursday, November 10, 2016 the Abbey Lane Student Council met before school to organize and bag donated Halloween candy for local Veterans.

Fourth-graders at Abbey Lane took an in-house field trip courtesy of Journeys into American Indian Territory, a program that complemented the students' social studies curriculum about native peoples.
